Your Memphis veterinarian will recommend a number of vaccinations to ensure that your pet is able to resist the common diseases that can endanger his or her health. These vaccinations are generally given to fight distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus and rabies, and they are generally administered yearly.
Rabies is a disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. The virus is transmitted from animal to animal or from animal to humans, by a bite from an infected creature. Once infected, the animal will show fearfulness, aggression, difficulty swallowing, paralysis, staggering, seizures and eventual death. Vaccinating your pet against this disease will ensure that he or she does not acquire this infection. Rabies vaccinations are required in every state in the U.S. However, some states only require the rabies vaccination to be given every 3 years instead of every year. The scientific research is not clear about how often rabies vaccines should be given and many experts feel it is best to provide vaccines at least every 3 years. Other states where rabies is common in the wild population may require vaccinations more frequently.
Just as in human health care, vaccinations for pets have become part of routine preventative care that is important for maintaining general health. These vaccinations are safe when administered by an experienced veterinarian who can ensure that your pet in good health. Side effects are rare, but may include allergic reactions, swelling at the site, tumors at the site of injection or immune system problems. If you have concerns about having your pet vaccinated against these common illnesses, a veterinarian in Memphis will be happy to discuss the risks and rewards of vaccination.
